Oh Christmas Tree!

It's December 5th and many people have their decorations up for Christmas! If you are still looking for just the right tree, here are some tips for picking one out!

Live Trees:
- Before you buy, run your hand down the tree and see if needles fall out. Too many means the tree is already beginning to dry out. Look for a fresh tree that can withstand the length of the season.

- Have the place where you buy the tree make a fresh cut. This will help the tree to absorb water more effectively once it is in the stand at home.

- Looking for the most fragrant option? Choose Balsam or Fraiser Fir. These varieties are also less prone to shed their needles once inside.

Artificial Trees:
- For the best proportions, look for a tree that is 6 inches shorter than your ceiling height. Don't forget to account for your stand and tree topper.

- Look for 75-100 lights per foot of tree. Also look for lights on a continuous light source that won't go out when one bulb dies.

- Shop somewhere that they have sample trees on display. Look at the front view and side profile of the tree.

- A tree with more tips will look more natural. Also check to see what materials the branches are made from.

What do you look for in picking out the perfect Christmas tree?

Thanksgiving Safety Tips

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and plans for the big meal are well underway!

According to the National Fire Protection Association, Thanksgiving Day is the busiest day for home fires, of which the leading cause is cooking.  Keep your holiday safe and happy this year by following these tips below.

- Stay in the kitchen when you're cooking. Don't leave food unattended.
- Keep children away from the stovetop - by at least 3 feet
- Wear short sleeves while cooking
- Have pot holders and kitchen towels sit away from heat sources
- Make sure the floor is clear from toys and pocketbooks
- Keep all lit candles above the reach of children and make sure they are blown out when the evening is over
- Test all smoke detectors and fire extinguishers

Follow these safety tips and keep your home and family happy this Thanksgiving!
